African Water Facility (AWF)
The African Water Facility (AWF) is a specialized initiative established in 2004 to support water resource development and sanitation improvements across Africa. It is hosted and managed by the African Development Bank and works with governments, regional organizations, and civil society to address critical water challenges on the continent.
AWF primarily provides grants and technical assistance for project preparation, policy development, and innovative water solutions. Its goal is to help African countries secure sustainable access to clean water and sanitation, which are essential for health, economic growth, and environmental protection. The facility focuses on areas such as integrated water resources management, climate resilience, urban and rural water supply, and sanitation services.
One of AWF’s key roles is to bridge the gap between project ideas and bankable investments by funding feasibility studies and capacity-building initiatives. This helps attract larger financing from institutions like the AfDB and other international partners.
Through its interventions, AWF contributes to achieving global development targets, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6: clean water and sanitation. Overall, it plays a vital role in improving water security and supporting sustainable development across Africa. For more information visit the their website:https://www.africanwaterfacility.org/en
